MASS KISSING DAY ( Omed –Omedan ) in Bali



Post-Nyepi day, there is a unique tradition that has always held youth of the village, Sesetan, Denpasar, namely omed-omedan or mass kiss between a boy and girl in the village as a form of happiness the day after SILENT DAY. Participants omed-omedan is community of people or youth ranging from ages 17 years to 30 years or who have an adult but not yet married.

In Bali-Indonesia Dictionary, omed-omedan means of attraction. "Omed-omedan is the ancestral culture that continues to this day we have to preserve," Once upon a time omed-omedan not exercised and appear calamity that is characterized by its war two pigs before starting. Then the village elders decided to hold a procession omed direct-omedan to keep the village from a major disaster.

Omed-omedan procession began with worship together between comunity in temple row to invoke the safety and smooth operation during the event. After the prayer, the participants divided into 2 groups, men and women. About 50 youths are dealing with 50 girls. Once there the cue from the village elders, both groups see each other and kissing each other leading participants in front of thousands of spectators who crowded around the site omed-omedan.

The procession is conducted alternately and each participant is male or female appointed one of their colleagues to argue a kiss at the forefront.
